Slowdive
Biography
Dive into the sound of Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive's English formed in 1989 on the Reading side. Driven by the lovely Rachel Goswell , chaining the demos until she released her first eponymous EP, in 1990, the band's sound is very similar to that heard from the shoegaze scene (overtly guitar effects, erased voices). The first full-length was released in 1992; Unfortunately, Just for A Day arrives in critical disaffection for the UK scene, abandoned for the new buzz created by US grunge bands.
It is necessary to wait for Souvlaki , in 1993, for the group to make a name, alongside MBV , Ride or Chapterhouse , assisted notably by the participation of Brian Eno on two pieces. Although the English continued to release EP on EP until 1995, artistic differences between the members of the group appeared. Pygmalion then seems the only result of guitarist Neil Halstead. By moving away from the shoegaze from its beginnings, Slowdive innovates and initiates what will later become the dream pop, made of dreamy guitars and minimalist melodies. It is too much (and especially not enough seller) for their label, Creation, which decides to break the contract of the group, which dissolves at the same time.
Neil Halstead, Rachel Goswell, Ian McCutcheon then formed Mojave 3 , with country influences, which signed at 4AD .
