Saxon
Biography
Formed in 1977 in South Yorkshire (England), the band, which will be associated with the NWOBHM movement, was originally composed of Peter "Biff" Byford (chant), Paul Quinn and Graham Oliver (guitars), Steve "Dobby" Dawson (bass) and Pete Gill (battery) and began as Son Of A Bitch before quickly taking the name Saxon. The band was noticed in the first parts of Motörhead and signed its first contract with Carrere as early as 1979, which released its first eponymous album. But it was in 1980 that Saxon blew up his two albums: Wheels Of Steel and Strong Arm Of The Law. The same year in August, the band will participate in the first Monsters Of Rock in Donington. The band toured all over Europe and the UK and even drilled into the charts in Japan. It will take until the end of 1981 for the band to find time to release its fourth album Denim And Leather. Shortly thereafter, Pete Gill was forced to leave the group after an injury and was replaced by Nigel Glockler on the battery. In 1982, Saxon released his first live album The Eagle Has Landed and participated for the second time in Monsters Of Rock. In 1983 Saxon set out to conquer America with his fifth album Power&The Glory. The US tour is a success but the band must face the emergence of the Glam scene. In 1984 for the album Crusader , they adopted a more commercial sound and went on tour with Mötley Crüe or Krokus in the first part. As the movement of the NWOBHM begins to run out of steam, this album, with EMI's signature, marks a more commercial turning point for the band, which will continue along this path with Innocence Is No Excuse and Rock The Nations albums. With Destiny in 1988, the group will still not be able to settle on the US charts for a long time and will not end up being let down by EMI. Nibbs Carter (low) joined the band the same year. Despite the emergence of the Grunge scene, Saxon continued to chain the albums: Solid Ball Of Rock (1991), Forever Free (1992) and just after the end of Dogs Of War (1995), they saw guitarist Graham Oliver for trying to sell bootlegs from the band's concert at Monsters Of Rock 1980. Doug Scarratt replaces him. Then the Nu-Metal wave passes through it, but Saxon continues, straight in his boots, and releases Unleash The Beast (1997), Metalhead (1999) and Killing Ground (2001). In 2003, Saxon won his legal battle against two former members who had filed the name "Saxon". 2004 marks the return to the stage for the band with Lionheart. The band adopts a more modern sound while remaining faithful to its Heavy-Metal roots. The following albums will continue on the same track. In 2012, Heavy Metal Thunder, a documentary film about the band, released worldwide and the following year the band released Sacrifice. Their latest studio album is Battering Ram , released on October 16, 2015 and the band is about to release its tenth live album, Let Me Feel Your Power , on September 23, 2016 at UDR.
