My Dying Bride
Biography
My Dying Bride is the most famous Doom group in the world. Influence of dozens of bands, addicted by thousands of fans, its importance is immense within the scene. He formed, with Anathema and Paradise Lost, what is usually called the "Big Three", with reference to the three groups from the UK signed by Peaceville Records, responsible for the entire second wave of Doom Death bands. The band formed in 1990 in Halifax, England, with Calvin Robertshaw (guitar), Aaron Stainthorpe (chant), Andrew Craighan (guitar) and Rick Miah (battery), and released after only six months of rehearsal a first demo, Towards the Sinister, with a strong Death Metal accent. Shortly afterwards, an EP was released by the Frenchmen of Listable, entitled God is Alone, all copies of which will be sold almost immediately. Peaceville Records flicks the right shot and signs the band. This is the training signed at a very important label only one year after its creation. Symphonary Infernus and Spera Empyrium , new EP, does not delay and marks the arrival of bass player Ade Jackson in the band. Very productive, the band quickly followed up on its first album, As the Flower Withers , which pushed back the Doom's boundaries, so much so that the band's music was then called "Doom Metal avant-garde". After a few concerts in the United Kingdom and Europe, the band recorded in 1993 an EP, The Thrash of Naked Limbs , which earned him a reputation as the forerunner of Gothic Metal thanks to the use of violin, piano, female singing and alternating clear voice/crowl voice. Building on this new recognition, the band hired Martin Powell, a pianist/studio violinist who accompanied him from the beginning. My Dying Bride is probably Doom's first band to incorporate violin into his compositions. For the record, it is during the filming of a clip for this EP that Miah will hurt his wrist after a serious fall, forcing the band to cancel all his European tour with G.G.F.H. Another EP is born, Unreleased Bitterness. At the end of 1993, a huge tour was launched to coincide with the release of the band's new opus, Turn Loose the Swans , an album now considered to be one of the main pieces of the Doom Death. The tour will be a huge success, confirming the great popularity of the English. 1994 will be a quiet year for the group, which will be far from inactive. Apart from the releases of two EPs, The Sexuality of Bereavement and I am the Bloody Earth , the group will focus on the development of the future masterpiece. The Angel and the Dark River was released in 1995 and was followed by a huge tour of Europe, marked by the band's transition to the Dynamo Open Air Festival in Holland. This new album will be one of the band's biggest hits. The end of the year saw the band's first three EPs reissued in a compilation entitled Trinity, as well as a European tour in the first part of Iron Maiden. In 1996 My Dying Bride released a new album, Like Gods of the Sun , more accessible than his other productions. Three tours followed, the first in the same year with Cathedral, the second in the following year with Sentenced, and the last in the United States in the first part of Dio. Unfortunately, this first tour across the Atlantic will be marked by an illness contracted by Miah, which will force him to leave the band permanently. A temporary drummer will be found in 1998 in the person of Bill Law for recording a new opus, during which My Dying Bride will lose another member, Powell deciding to leave the ship. It is therefore with a modified line-up that the band releases the album with the strange title, 34.788%... Complete, which will make him lose part of his audience because too experimental. Note the presence of Michelle Richfield (ex- Anathema , Antimatter ) as a guest. The band was then very discreet for some time, breaking the silence only to announce its entry into the studio on the occasion of the recording of its sixth album, instead of a tour, as well as the recruitment of Shaun Taylor-Steels (ex- Anathema) as a permanent drummer. Johnny Maudlin will perform the keyboard parts in the studio. It was at the end of 1999 that The Light at the End of the World was released, a back-to-source album for the band, Turn Loose the Swans period. The band then recruited a second guitarist, Hamish Glencross. In 2000, the formation celebrates its ten years of existence with a major tour in Western Europe and the preparation of two compilations, Meisterwerk 1 & Meisterwerk 2 . The band soon entered the studio to record a new album, The Dreadful Hours , which will be released in 2001, again with Maudlin on keyboards. 2002 will be a hollow year for the band, marked only by the release of a DVD, For Darkest Eyes, and a live, The Voice of the Wretched. The band returned in 2004 with a new opus, Songs of Darkness, Words of Light, logical sequel to The Dreadful Hours, which allowed it to regain the lost audience with 34.788%... Complete. The year 2005 will be marked by the release of an anthology entitled Anti-Diluvian Chronicles and a new DVD, Sinamarata. The band's return is announced for 2006, with the arrivals of Deeper Down , EP announced for September 18, and the ninth studio album, entitled A Line of Deathless Kings , announced for October 9, with a permanent keyboardist in the person of Sarah Stenton.
Unfortunately, Steels has to leave the band when recording the album, for health reasons. John Bennet will provide the battery parts in the studio.
