Monster Magnet
Biography
Monster Magnet's story began in the late 1980s in New Jersey. The band then played under different names a rock noiseist and sipmed with effects influenced by the then nascent grunge and the psychedelism of the 70's, Hawkwind in the lead. It was at that time that they recorded Forget About Life, I'm High On Dope, their first demo, under the name of Airport 75. Shortly after, an EP was released and, above all, a first album that would be a success, including in Europe. The band doesn't know it, but it's becoming one of the pioneers of the sounder rock alongside Kyuss who is developing about the same kind of sound across the country at the same time. The adventure continues crescendo: European tour, US tour with Soundgarden, release of Superjudge in 93 and then Dopes To Infinity in 95 (often considered the culmination of their discography). The line-up has undergone changes in the meantime but is still gravitating around the charismatic leader Dave Wyndorf. After a three-year silence, Dave spent several weeks in Las Vegas. It will be the source of inspiration for Powertrip that marks a turning point in Monster Magnet's discography by leaving a little psychedelic sounds for a more concise and rock'n'roll style. To date, they still have their biggest commercial success. February 2006 Dave makes a serious overdose of anxiolytics but escapes, and soon recovered begins to compose 4-Way Diablo. The reception will be mixed but the band is still furious live. 2010 saw the departure of long-time guitarist Ed Mundell and the release of Mastermind , the band's 8th album.
