Mogwai
Biography
Mogwai's story began in Glasgow (Scotland) in 1995, with Stuart Braithwaite (guitar), Dominic Aitchinson (bass), Martin Bulloch (battery), John Cummings (guitar), and Barry Burns (claviers, programming, guitar, flute). Influenced by bands such as Joy Division , The Cure , Slint , Pixies , The Jesus&Mary Chain , or My Bloody Valentine , the five Scots will position themselves as true pioneers of a movement that looks great to the instrumental, progressive, and explosively noise atmospheres: post rock. From its early years of activity, Mogwai revealed its appeal for short formats by leaving no less than seven EPs and other Splits until 1997. Ten Rapid then rationalizes the whole by compiling these and other pieces scattered from within a single album, but it is at the end of this year 1997 that their real debut discography is made with the very noticed Young Team. The prestigious American Indie label Matador hastened to sign the phenomenon, feeling illico the potential of this rock to the particular structures, just like the famous BBC radio host John Peel who keeps inviting the combo to his studios. Following the release of Kicking A Dead Pig remix album, Mogwai released the cover in 1999 with Come On Die Young , his second long term. Success is again at the rendezvous and thus allows the quintet to travel the world, but it will also inspire many vocations for post rock in all the countries it crosses. The year 2000 marks the release of EP+6 , whose aim was to bring together the different EPs that the band released until then, as well as the creation of their own label: Rock Action Records (which notably signed the Japanese leader of the screen that Envy is). Its name will be chosen by Mogwai for its third delivery the following year. After having more than decently defended on stage, it is time to go back to the studio and that is how Happy Songs For Happy People came into being in 2003. Despite success, Mogwai remains faithful to those who believed in him in his early days, especially John Peel. Released a few months before the tragic death of the host in 2005, Government Commissions aims to bring together the best moments captured in the BBC's mythical studios. Then the post rockers will win Glasgow Castle Of Doom a few months later. Between April and October 2005, they worked hard to produce their fifth album with producer Tony Doogan, who had already performed on the two previous opus, and composer/arranger Craig Armstrong. It was in March 2006 that Mogwai finally gave birth to this Mr Beast. The Scots continued their journey with The Hawk Is Howling (2008), Hardcore Will Never Die , But You Will (2011) and Rave Tapes (2014). The band also works on documentary music, such as Atomic and Before The Flood. In 2017, Mogwai announced the release of his new album, Every Country's Sun.
