Califone

Listening to a Califone album is a bit like going to a molecular gastronomy restaurant. Each title could be compared to a dish that we take you to the table, all more surprising than each other. Different sounds of different instruments blend subtly and bring atmospheres, textures and sensations, each time for a unique experience. In the late 1990s in Chicago, Tim Rutili, a frontman of the alternative Red Meat group, decided to set up a solo project. He then surrounded some of his colleagues from Red Meat, and other musicians from the region to quietly share some new ideas. Only here, what was initially only a small project will become Califone. Group Indie Rock / Experimental, Califone offers a unique music, a sweet blend of Folk, Pop, Blues, Jazz and Rock. What makes the band's music so special is probably due to the fact that Califone is composed solely of multi-instrumentalists of genius, the current line-up being composed of Tim Rutili, Ben Massarella, Joe Adamik and Jim Becker. It is not surprising to learn, for example, that on All My Friends Are Funeral Singers, more than 25 different instruments were used. But Chicagoans don't just make music. Most of their albums each follow their own theme, such as the recurring dreams on Heron King Blues or the huge work on All My Friends Are Funeral Singers , a conceptual album completed by a feature film of the same title, appeared a few months after the release of the album. The record that probably made the most of Califone is without a doubt Roots&Crowns , an album hailed by the music critic and even considered by some as one of the best albums of the 2000s. On stage, music is highlighted by highly sought after performances, often accompanied by cinematographic projections (documentaries, clips or experimental films) usually created by Rutili. At times, the band improvises live soundtracks with silent films. Their latest effort is Stiches , released in September 2013.
