Anathema
Biography
Anathema was born in 1990 in Liverpool from the inspiration of brothers Vincent, Daniel (both guitarists) and Jamie Cavanagh (bassist) replaced in 1992 by Duncan Patterson, under the name of Pagan Angel. At the beginning of his career, the band played in a powerful and heavy doom death style, from their first eo Crestfallen in 1992, to their first album Serenades in 1993, to ep Pentecost in 1995. The black pessimism and bitter despair that then emanate from the band's music will never disappear afterwards. After the departure of singer Darren White, Anathema turns to an increasingly rock-based sound, but above all much more creative, as already announced by The Silent Enigma, released the same year, varied, intoxicating and melodic, with heavy passages. Vincent Cavanagh passed the band's singer with increasing success. The Pink Floyd , Hope , on Eternity in 1996, is a nice cover of the album, which recalls the sound of the last works of the mythical band, made of weightlessness guitars and ethereal keyboards. Then in 1998, Alternative 4 , filled with emotional nuggets largely chiseled by Duncan Patterson, offered them a great critical success. It is the last record on which the bassist appears, which leaves the band due to differences on the musical direction to found Antimatter . He was replaced in 1999 by Dave Pybus for Judgment , an album more accessible than the previous one. In 2001, Les Smith, Cradle Of Filth keyboardist already present on Eternity, joined the band for the recording of the lancinant and melancholic A Fine Day To Exit. Their music becomes more and more atmospheric and the album A Natural Disaster in 2003 reaches a remarkable quality, the compositions of Danny Cavanagh being sometimes not without recalling the best of Radiohead , another pregnant influence of the band over the years, between tortured sympathies and harmonious jewelry. It's Jamie Cavanagh who holds the bass on this record, and you can hear Lee Douglas' beautiful voice, drummer John Douglas' sister. Anathema , remains a group often unknown, but sincere and touching, always ready to innovate, whose emotionally rich music surely deserves a wider audience. In 2006 the group sought a label for its next opus, some of which were then made available free of charge on its official website. In the absence of the long-awaited new album, it is finally a record of acoustic reinterpretations that is finally released in 2008: Hindsight . It will take two more years to see Anathema fully back to business with We're Here Because We're Here, the, already, sweetest exit of the British.
